There are 111 officially notified Inland national waterways in India with network coverage of around 20,275.5 Km & have handled 55 million tonnes (MT) in 2017-18 and 72 MT in 2018-19 and are expected to handle 100 MT by 2021-22. As of now in many countries, the freight mode share of waterways has decreased over the last two decades due to limited investments in waterway channelization, dredging, docking facilities, navigational aids, fleet capacity, and efficiency. However, if the transportation by inland waterways is utilized optionally as a single mode of transportation or through multimodal transportation can reduce the logistics cost to 1/10th compared to logistics lost by road transport. Transportation through Inland waterways is an ideal option for transporting dangerous goods and less time-sensitive goods and India having such a large network of inland waterways can leverage transportation by inland waterways which will seamlessly provide connectivity to the ports.

Freight trains earn two-thirds of all IR revenue and are known as the railways' "bread earners." During 2020-2021, when most activities were under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Indian Railways was providing relentless services in freight transportation in the country. Indian Railways achieved the highest ever loading of 1,232 million tonnes in 2020-2021. Since rail service has to stay on the tracks, they can only move between rail-served buildings or yards specific for the bulk freight it is intended to handle. Rail freight is a great solution for pre-planned long-hauls, and moving from OTR to rail could benefit your supply chain in several ways.
